The Villa battled back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to beat the Royals and book a semi-final place in the FA Cup at a bright Madjeski Stadium.
Agbonlahor was unwell and O'Neill paired Carew and Heskey up front.
The Villa kicked-off and immediatetly the Villa were on the back-foot.
They were second best in all aspects and phases of the game as the struggling Championship outfit took the game to their opponents, who are 31 places above them in the league standings.
It was as poor a performance as we have seen from the claret and blues in a long, long time and it was no surprise when Reading took the lead on 27 minutes and then deservedly doubled it three minutes before the break.
It might have been a hangover from the League Cup Final defeat or the March malaise that we have become accustomed to or a combination of both.

In-form striker Wayne Rooney came off the bench to score the winner in a close game at a chilly Wembley.
Petrov had recovered from a virus and Heskey returned in what has been O'Neill's favourite line-up of late.
The Villa got off to a dream start with their first foray of the game.
In the 5th minute Agbonlahor picked up the ball on the half-way line and made ground into the United box. In a clumsy challenge he was brought down by Vidic, who by the letter of the law, should have been sent off.
Milner calmly swept the ball home sending Kuszczak the wrong way.
The lead, however, was fairly short-lived.
Half-a-dozen minutes later Berbatov dispossessed Dunne 30 yds out. The Villa defender was unlucky insomuch that his attempt to retrieve the situation saw the ball bounce to Owen whose first time effort beat the despairing dive of Friedel.
United were prepared to let the Villa have the ball, getting every man behind the ball as the first opportunity to prevent the counter attacking threat and nullyfying their pace.
Owen looked to have a chance in a foot race with Collins but the striker pulled up lame and was replaced by Rooney.
The Red Devils might have gone ahead just before the break when af neat work around the box Parks drive thumped the base of the LH post and was deflected to safety off the leg of Cuellar.

The Villa advanced to the quarter finals of the FA Cup and edged closer to a double Wembley appearance after a hard-fought win over gallant Crystal Palace at a chilly Villa Park.
O'Neill went with a full strength line-up despite Petrov being unavailable through injury and Collins and Friedel getting a rest. The inclusion of Giuzan in goal is an indicator that the older American will be in goal for the League Cup Final.
The Villa made another good start but despite being in command it was with three minutes remaining in the half that the Villans found a way to goal.
Palace manager Warnock will be funing as, once again, the opener was fashioned from a corner that should have been a goal kick.
Agbonlagor heading in Ashley Youngs corner kick.
The Villa were livelier in the second half but were profligate in the extreme.
Carew, Agbonlahor, Warnock and Dunne all missing gilt-edge chances to put the tie beyond doubt.
Living dangerously the Villa were hauled level when a clumsy Warnock challenge on Lee saw the ref award a spot-kick to the Eagles.
On 72 minutes Ambrose converted.
The crowd, amazingly outsung by the visitors, were on tenterhooks and Delph was replaced by Sidwell.
Carew, who had been ineffective most of the evening settled the game with a brace of penalties. Brought down twice, on 79 and 88 minutes, the big Norwegian twice got up to hammer the kicks home giving 'keeper Speroni no chance.
Rewarded with a place in the quarter finals of the FA Cup the Villa will leave tomorrow for a few days rest before taking on Manchester United in Sunday's League Cup Final at Wembley.
Villa will face Reading, who turned over local rivals West Brom in another replay will be the first opponents to try and prevent the Villa appearing in two Wembley Finals. |

From Soccernet:-
Stewart Downing scored his first brace of Premier League goals for Aston Villa as they put a poor first-half performance behind them to overwhelm Burnley at Villa Park.
The Clarets took a shock tenth-minute lead through Steven Fletcher and all Villa could muster before half-time was a fortunate equaliser from Ashley Young.
But four goals in 13 minutes after the break from Downing (two), Emile Heskey and Gabriel Agbonlahor kept Villa on course for a Champions League spot before Martin Paterson's late consolation. In contrast, Burnley have now lost six of their last seven league games.
Fit-again Agbonlahor teed up Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov for the home side's first chance on the edge of the box but he dragged his shot well wide, but Burnley then stunned Villa by taking the lead through Fletcher's 11th goal of the campaign.
Jack Cork's pass allowed David Nugent to break into the Villa box and his low centre was turned home at the far post by Fletcher, who had managed to remain on-side.
Nugent made a powerful burst towards the Villa area and his shot took a deflection which had goalkeeper Brad Friedel scrambling across his line before it drifted just wide.
It was 24 minutes before Villa created their first clear-cut opening.
Downing delivered a probing centre from the right and Heskey flashed a glancing header only a couple of feet wide of the far post.
Villa finally drew level after 33 minutes through Ashley Young's seventh goal of the campaign.
