With the exception of the Villa's international quartet the whole squad reported back to pre-season training Thursday, July 8th.
Martin O'Neill called for patience from all the fringe players who might be looking to get away for first team football.
Aimed at the likes of Sidwell, Reo-Coker, Luke Young, Shorey (et al), the manager used the example of Gareth Bale at SPurs as someone who might have been discarded but remained at his club to forge an impressive reputation towards the end of last season.
The call for patience might have been directed at the fans who, with another feeling of deja vu, have seen the Villa bring in no new names before training got underway.
Hopefully we will not suffer another July/August of frustration only to see last-minute wheeling and dealing.
Milner, Heskey, Warnock and Guzan will report in a couple of weeks time after being in South Africa for the World Cup. |

Fabio Capello's selection of Stephen Warnock as cover for left-back Ashley Cole shock's the world of English football.
Without playing a minute of the two pre-WC friendlies the Villa left-back finds himself on the plane to Johannesburg.
Obviously the pundits "selection" Leighton Baines played himself out of the tournament line-up with a poor display against Mexico.
Villa men Milner and Heskey make-up the claret and blue trio. |

The 2009/10 campaign wound down in what is best described as typical fashion, the Villa's home form again shown as poor and ineffective particularly against inferior opposition.
O'Neill played his usual XI and a good crowd, almost a full-house, was on hand to see the final game of the season.
The first half had the look and feel of a final day encounter which was of no real interest to both teams.
The Villa had most of the chances to open the scoring but gailed to capitalise.
On 6 minutes Carew intercepted aback-pass but was out-hustled by Samba. From the resulting corner Robinson did well to save Collins' header.
Friedel earned his money touching a long-range effort over the goal-line and then Dunn first attempt on goal was wide.
Before the break Warnock limped off to be replaced by Luke Young, a rare appearance.
The visitor's thought they had won a penalty when Dunn went down under a challenge from Collins but he was only booked for diving. Replays suggest the ref might have got it wrong.
The breakthrough could have been moments later when Carew headed on DOwning's cross but Milner was unable to get the all important final touch.
The Villa had a spot-kick appeal turned down as Samba again clashed with Carew but referee Bennet again waved play on.
O'Neill brought on Heskey and Delfouneso for Carew and Agbolahor chasing the winner.
Unfortunately it came at the other end when Dunne got the final touch to Olsson's cross with 6 minutes left.
The Villa managed to hold onto 6th place as Liverpool were held to a draw at Hull.
Managing to win only 8 home league games tell's it's own story and once again proved to be the Villa's nemesis. |

The Villa's slim hopes of finishing fourth and qualifying for the Champions League were finally snuffed out at Eastlands by the new money-men of English football.
O'Neill picked his usual starting XI including 7 players who have already contested 30+ league games each this season.
The hiome side bossed the first half but against the run of play it was Carew with his 17th goal of the campaign who put the Villa on the board just after the first quarter of an hour.
Despite conceding possession in the ratio of 2 to 1 it was the Villa who looked likely to score the second goal albeit from long range.
Milner and Downing might have beaten stand-in goalie Fulop and the Villa were guilty of not putting the Middlesbrough loan player under more pressure.
Freidel had to palma deflected shot away for a corner but the Villa rearguard were keeping things very tight.
The game changed dramatically in the space of 90 seconds five minutes before the break.
Johnson was brought down by the rashest of challenges by Warnock. The winger had got a heavy touch at the edge of the box and was going nowhere.
Tevez' spot-kick was blasted under the diving Freidel. |
