Hapless Villa are pummelled, humbled and embarassed in the North East as newly promoted Newcastle hit them for six, exacting revenge for the defeat in April 2009 that sent the bar-codes down.
Ireland came in for his debut on his 24th birthday (which was the only thing to celebrate) wearing, strangely(?), the No. 9 shirt.
The Villa started as bright as the sunshine and should have gone ahead inside 10 minutes. Ashley Young ran onto Ireland's through ball only to be clipped by the home 'keeper.
The spot kick was blasted high over Harper's bar by Carew.
Two minutes later Barton scored but the Villa still looked dangerous.
A contentious offside decision denied the Villa a leveller when Young's effort was ruled out and that was all she wrote for the claret and blues.
The Toon, now showing some urgency and confidence grabbed control of the midfield and took command of the game.
Two goals in as many minutes just after the half-hour left McDonalds men with a mountain to climb.
The second-half was a reminder of last season's debacle at Stamford Bridge as too many players became anonymous and the body language left more than a little to be desired.
The youngsters Albrighton and Clark were having a torrid time and the senior players were doing little to help them or the cause.
Three more goals were rattled home with the home centre-forward, Carroll, getting a hat-trick.
This is a defeat that might put the appointment of a new manager on the fast-track. A game that need's to be forgotten and it will be interesting to see how (if?) the Villa can bounce back. |

The Villa got the new season underway with an emphatic victory over West Ham at a Villa Park that was a meteorological smorgasbord.
More important however, was the style of the win.
Under the guidance of temporary manager Kevin McDonald the Villa took the game by the scruff of the neck and were in command from the kick-off.
Playing at a high-tempo the Villans were dominant throughout with the exception of a 10 minute spell at the start of the second-half.
While a more clear-cut scoreline might have been warranted the claret and blues were luck on more than one occasion and Friedel had to be smart to keep the clean-sheet intact.
Youngster Albrighton might have edged the Man Of The Match he was closely followed by a fully committed Milner, Carew and Downing.
The goals came courtesy of Downing, a rare Petrov header and a rasping Milner drive.
McDonald was not afraid to include Albrighton and central defender Clark from the off and later introduced Bannon and Weimann. Thereby showing more belief than O’Neill in the Villa Academy stars.
Withdrawing Milner late-on allowed the fans to give him a standing ovation in what was probably his last action in a claret and blue shirt.
The Villa travel to Vienna for Thursday Europa game and will seek refvenge for the last season’s defeat.

Late reports suggest that manager Martin O'Neill has sensationally quit the club with the new season only 5 ddays away.
Coach Kevin McDonal will take temporary charge.
After four years at the club and with the Milner/Ireland swap moves imminent the timing of the decision will stun Villa fans.

With the exception of the Villa's international quartet the whole squad reported back to pre-season training Thursday, July 8th.
Martin O'Neill called for patience from all the fringe players who might be looking to get away for first team football.
Aimed at the likes of Sidwell, Reo-Coker, Luke Young, Shorey (et al), the manager used the example of Gareth Bale at SPurs as someone who might have been discarded but remained at his club to forge an impressive reputation towards the end of last season.
The call for patience might have been directed at the fans who, with another feeling of deja vu, have seen the Villa bring in no new names before training got underway.
Hopefully we will not suffer another July/August of frustration only to see last-minute wheeling and dealing.
Milner, Heskey, Warnock and Guzan will report in a couple of weeks time after being in South Africa for the World Cup. |
