With the exception of the Villa's international quartet the whole squad reported back to pre-season training Thursday, July 8th.
Martin O'Neill called for patience from all the fringe players who might be looking to get away for first team football.
Aimed at the likes of Sidwell, Reo-Coker, Luke Young, Shorey (et al), the manager used the example of Gareth Bale at SPurs as someone who might have been discarded but remained at his club to forge an impressive reputation towards the end of last season.
The call for patience might have been directed at the fans who, with another feeling of deja vu, have seen the Villa bring in no new names before training got underway.
Hopefully we will not suffer another July/August of frustration only to see last-minute wheeling and dealing.
Milner, Heskey, Warnock and Guzan will report in a couple of weeks time after being in South Africa for the World Cup.
